Dinner with The AlchemisT- A Blog Series, Part 1
In the Bible there are many examples of God as an AlchemisT, but in "Dinner with the AlchemisT" let's look at some notable action by a few other characters in the scriptures.
We pick up then, with the book of Job.
In Proverbs we learn that "Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom", but is that all that goes into the flask of the Bible's best Alchemist? In chapter 1 of Job, we read that Job is a man who lives in the land of Uz and is blameless and upright. the Bible says that Job feared God and shunned evil. This lifestyle appears to make Job a blessed man and he is rather wealthy, with thousands of sheep and camel and hundreds of oxen too. Job also offered burnt offerings on behalf of his children, thinking "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts."
Upright indeed, but by Chapter 1 verse 20, Job is without all of those things and his children have also been taken away from him.
What happens next must also go into the flask of this seeming Alchemist. Surely Job fights back. In Chapter 27 he states, "I maintain my innocence. I will not deny my integrity."
In Chapter 29, he remembers the goodness of God, and we will also put this into the flask. ".. for the days when God watched over me, when His lamp shone on my head and by His light I walked through darkness!" ".. for the days when.. God's intimate friendship blessed my house, .. when my path was drenched with cream and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil."
Throughout the book Job also hears from the naysayers, and we will also turn this in to be added to the bubbling contents of this flask. In Chapter 22, Eliphaz a friend speaks "Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise person benefit him? What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would be gained if your ways were blameless?"
Job retorts, "When He has tested me, I will come forth as gold."
But what did alchemy itself add to any of this? Let's look at what God has to say. In Chapter 38 thru 41, God speaks with a list of questions for Job "Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place... Have you entered the storehouse of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail... Can you loosen Orion's belt? Would you discredit my justice?" This also must go into the flask. For it was God's confidence and assurance that creates the path for Job's tussle with alchemy.
What is presented in the end is Job's brilliant surrender and his courageous lament to bring about not just restoration, but a great study for the Christian. For his first words "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." were the triumphant carriers for the entire subsequent journey of turning the right ingredients (upright, blameless, shunner of evil) into a picture of completeness. In this, we recognize Romans 5:3-5 for we know that perseverance brings great hope.
Remember to go within that you may never go without. The God within you awaits you! Until our paths collide again, I wish you... Peace, Love, Light, and Wholeness.
