Thank you for visiting The Road2Wholeness Blog for "7 Wisdom Building Scriptures" a Quick-Blog series.
If you're just landing in the series, we invite you to begin at the beginning. Today we are reading from the scripture Proverbs 4:23, which reads "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flow from it." Further, in verse 24, the writer-King Solomon speaks on the mouth gate, and in verse 25 King Solomon speaks about the eyes. Nowhere however does Solomon speak about the ear gate. Was this an oversight, or is there a convergence we ought to be aware of?
Let's back up. Question. How does information get stored in our hearts? and .. What is the doorway to one's heart? If we are to make proper use of this Wisdom Building scripture, certainly it draws us to make sense of these questions. Lets review: The text says above all else. The text then says "guard the heart". Lastly, it reads.. "for everything you do flow from it". Therefore we see that the word 'guard' is likely being thought of as in the word "tend". In other words, "tend to your heart; for everything flows from it".
Let's anchor this word to two other scriptures that will make this warning more than a misconceived notion that tells us to harden one's heart. If we read Ezekiel 36:26, we see that the Lord has promised to replace the heart made of stone with a heart that is pliable; a heart made of flesh. So we know that we are not being asked to harden our hearts. Instead we are being asked to watch over and tend to what is in the heart, for consequently, everything flows from it. Next, let's read from Luke 6:45. It says, "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart".
Therefore we return to the question of how do things get stored up in our hearts. In other words, how do we get anchored to the truths we hold in our hearts? And how do we change or filter out the things we don't want held in our hearts? Finally, we look at Romans 10:17 which tells us "So then faith comes by hearing."
Now then, let's read our Proverb 4:23 Wisdom Building Scripture like this.. "Above all gates, guard your hearing, for the actions of your faith, flows from it."
